PSA vs CGC vs BGS: Which Grading Company Should You Use?
A clear-eyed comparison of the three major grading companies — turnaround, resale demand, slab design, and when grading is actually worth it.
What grading actually does
Grading authenticates a card and assigns a numerical condition score, then seals it in a tamper-evident slab. This does two things: it protects the card, and — for high-condition, in-demand cards — it can significantly increase resale value and liquidity.
Grading is not free money. Fees, shipping, and the risk of a lower-than-hoped grade all matter. Grading a common card, or a card that comes back a 7 or 8, often costs more than it adds. Grade selectively.
PSA — the market default
PSA is the most widely recognized grader in the Pokémon market, and PSA-graded cards generally enjoy the deepest resale demand and often the strongest prices, especially for vintage. For most collectors selling in the US market, PSA is the safe default.
The trade-offs are cost and turnaround, which vary with service tier and demand. PSA’s label and population reports are the industry reference point.
CGC — strong value and consistency
CGC came from the comic-grading world and has built a solid reputation in cards. Collectors often praise its consistency and slab quality, and pricing can be attractive. Resale demand is strong though generally a notch below PSA for equivalent grades in the Pokémon market.
BGS — subgrades and the black label
BGS is known for subgrades (centering, corners, edges, surface) and its coveted "Black Label" 10, which requires four perfect subgrades and carries a large premium. BGS is popular with collectors who want granular condition detail, though turnaround and cost can be higher.
So which should you use?
For maximum resale value and liquidity, especially on vintage, PSA is usually the answer. For strong value and consistent grading, CGC is an excellent choice. For subgrade detail and pursuing pristine registry copies, BGS has a dedicated following.
Our practical rule: only grade cards that are (a) genuinely near-mint or better and (b) valuable enough that the grade will more than cover the fee. Everything else is better kept raw in a good holder.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a PSA 10 worth more than a CGC 10?+
In the current Pokémon market, PSA 10s often command a premium over equivalent grades from other companies due to brand demand — but this varies by card and can change. Always check recent comparable sales.
Is it worth grading a card worth $20?+
Usually not. Once you factor in grading fees and shipping, low-value cards rarely justify the cost unless a perfect grade meaningfully multiplies the price.
